Artist Spotlight: The Watson Twins

We recently caught up with The Watson Twins, the dynamic duo raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and now calling Nashville, TN home. Known for their captivating sound and infectious energy, we asked them some questions about their musical journey, what inspires them, and what it's like to create together.

What led you to finding your passion and how did you decided to pursue it together?
We've always loved singing together since we were little kids. Harmonizing just came naturally to us and so pursuing it together seemed like a natural progression. We are not only twin sisters, but best friends and creative partners and we feel fortunate to have been able to spend most of our adult lives touring around the world singing, recording our own records and singing backup vocals for other artists.

What is it like to work so closely with your twin?
More often than not we are on the same page which makes it easy.  When we feel strongly about a certain creative direction or pursuing an adventure, we know it's the right move. We can encourage one another and also give honest feedback which is a great balance.

What (or who) inspires each of you?
It's definitely not one person or thing, but we do take inspiration from our experiences.  Whether it be the landscape, adventures we've had, folks we've met along the way.  It's fun to take a little moment or idea and start to build on it.  We've co-written the last two records together, so being able to bring a tiny idea to the table and expand it together is fun and rewarding.

What songs have you had on repeat recently?
Sierra Ferrell - American Dreaming
Leiv Vollebekk - Into the Ether
Bill Evans - Gary's Theme
Khruangbin

What does your perfect day look like?
Getting up and having coffee with "the hubs" and our dog... listening to Jazz. Going on a walk in my neighborhood, writing some music and enjoying time with friends and family.

What is your favorite place you’ve traveled to?
That's a tough one! Honestly, going to cities where we have friends is always awesome. We get to be tourists, experience a new place, catchup AND play a show.  Recent favorite cities include St. Augustine, Santa Fe and Telluride.

What is the one thing you would most like to change about the world?
Our song HOLLER addresses that... more kindness and love would be great, we sing "Looking for a reason, to hold the truth and carry on, we gotta keep on tryin' harder, why can't we all just get along? Holler if you hear me".  It would be amazing if people could listen more, love more and have less fear and hate.

What do you wear when you want to feel your very best?
We are BIG collectors of jewelry! Vintage, costume, fun, chunky, flashy... we like it all and call them our "power pieces".  As we travel around the country we often pick up unique pieces.  They become part of the memory and when you wear them it takes you back to that place and your experience.

Why do you wear BEL KAZAN? What’s the piece you reach for most?
We love wearing BEL KAZAN on stage, the fabrics are so unique and memorable. Being able to wear a matching fabric but different designs has been part of our "stage look" for the last 6 years and we were so excited to find a small independent, ethical, environmentally focused brand that we could support.  Lots of fans ask if they are custom and we happily tell them about BEL KAZAN!
